Growing Your Own Vegetables in the Home Garden
Growing vegetables in the home garden is a profitable hobby and an
excellent form of relaxation. Most householders have some room in
their backyards for a few vegetables, and farm gardens can supply a
whole range of vegetables, practically all of the year. Even
flat-dwellers may grow a few herbs in pots or boxes.

Fresh organic vegetables from our veggie garden. The garden produced a
crate like this every 3-4 days! Nothing can really match the freshness
and quality of vegetables freshly picked in the garden. Flavor, texture
and food value are generally far superior ; this applies particularly to
the raw salad vegetables. Home-grown produce can also be picked at the
peak of maturity. Modern freezers enable house owners to preserve
vegetables for use later in the year when commercial supplies are
scarce. Not all retailers supply the less commonly eaten vegetables ;
the home gardener can grow these himself - within the limits of the
season and locality. Here we discuss the general principles of garden
management and then give in detail the requirements of individual crops.
Many
of the finer points of growing vegetables under your own conditions will
only be learnt by experience. However, always remember these basic rules
:
- Do not try to grow too much.
- Good soil preparation will always pay dividends.
- Plant the correct varieties for the season and your district.
- Keep up with routine operations such as irrigation, weeding, and
pest and disease control.
- Harvest vegetables at the proper stage of maturity.
